Crunch Time

Rick Moran is organizing a blogburst for Fred Thompson, who is putting all his chips on the South Carolina table. He makes a pretty good case as to why his chances may be good for a win there, but he needs money.

Fred was just on Hannity for an hour today taking questions. If I had any doubts about him, they were erased today. His answers were very thoughtful and right on.

Imagine Fred as the nominee in a debate against the Democratic candidate. Against Obama, he might do ok. Both of them dislike the current debate format, both of them prefer to answer in a longer more thoughtful manner. The resulting debate might be boring for the public but a treat for wonks. Against Hillary, Hillary might seem shrill if she can't remember to use her new softer style, but Fred is likely to seem sluggish, and there might be nothing he can do about that. Any of the other top Republicans would do better than Fred in a debate with Hillary.

Or maybe Fred would make Hillary seem even more Hillary. If it comes down to Fred vs. Hillary I think that's more likely and he'd come across as patient and good-natured while Hillary would come across as nagging and mean-spirited. Water and fire.
