My Book To Help America Unlike many of the items that Iowahawk has unearthed, this one is real, and provides a fascinating (and somewhat depressing) contrast of three different decades, and our national attitudes toward war. This should be mandatory reading for the latest group of State Department "civil servants" who are "reluctant" to do their part. Posted by Mike Roark at November 6, 2007 07:48 AMThis should be mandatory reading for the latest group of State Department "civil servants" who are "reluctant" to do their part. Posted by Mike Roark at November 6, 2007 07:48 AMInteresting. So even hardcore libertarians think people should obey the government and not just whine when something really needs to be done? Even if it's not good for your personal immediate wealth. Posted by mz at November 6, 2007 08:18 AMIt's a kid's book, mz; it's wasn't intended as a primer on how adults should or shouldn't act. Or do even hardcore liberals think kids shouldn't listen to their parents and other responsible adults, and should be allowed to do whatever they please, whenever they please? Even if it's not good for their personal development? No, wait; don't answer that. Posted by Mike at November 6, 2007 08:24 AMWhat, and who is a "hardcore libertarian"? Posted by Rand Simberg at November 6, 2007 08:24 AM"Well she was an American girl/Raised on promises..." Posted by FC at November 6, 2007 10:05 AMWell, I'm pretty much of one, and here's my take: we won't need to be admonishing our kids to do everything they can to help the adults win a war if that war is won early enough. Take it away, Winnie: "If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." Posted by Jay Manifold at November 6, 2007 10:09 AM"Amen" to Jay and to Winston Churchill. And yes, the book is aimed to children, putting things in a way children will understand. But the book still creeps me out because there are way too many adults who think like children, and who obey the State mindlessly, and are content to be victims of what has been termed Political Taylorism-- Frederick Taylor's ideas of industrial organization as applied to people, as if people were mere matter. I guess the nub of the matter is getting people to grow up..... *sigh*. Not that I'm always the best example. :-) Posted by Hale Adams at November 6, 2007 11:36 AMWhat, and who is a "hardcore libertarian"? I'm sorry Rand, but the debate has been framed. You'll just have to deal with your newly found hardcore libertarian beliefs. Posted by Karl Hallowell at November 6, 2007 11:38 AMA left wing British pol (forgot who) was quoted some time ago as saying that his ideal version of socialism was the WW2 homefront. You can see echos of that in the global warm-mongers (power/food rationing/transportation cuts) the nanny statists (help the war effort, keep yourself healthy/don't have accidents) and the anti-consummerists (rationing). It's interesting to me that Leaf's first book was solidly pacifist and then he produced this somewhat scary book. Kind of like the POV being a different side of the same coin.
