Watch Out For The Polar Bears

If the global warming evangelists had the slightest sense of irony, they'd never even attempt things like this. They have no concept of what laughing stocks they make of themselves.

"if the worst comes to the worst and there isn’t a break in the weather"

Now that is hilarious! Here they are trying to prove how terrible it is that the Earth is (supposedly) warming, yet hoping for it to warm up!

So indeed, the "worst comes to the worst" is the Arctic getting colder.

Plan B is the use of nuclear power.

Click on the polar bear link and you find more laughs:

There is hope that he might be able to join an ice-breaker convoy if and when the ice thins sufficiently. But Adrian’s latest news is that the ice is impenetrable, even with the assistance of a nuclear powered ice-breaker. A further impediment is that these convoys typically travel at 8-10 knots, which is too fast for Adrian’s yacht Barrabas to keep pace.

Adrian has endured days of storms as he waits for the ice to thin at Proliv Vil’kitskogo, 300 miles NW of his position. He became somewhat confused after receiving weather condition reports from the Russian Marine Operations HQ which constantly seemed to refer to light and moderate winds while he was experiencing winds in excess of 30 knots. In the end he realised that he was being given wind speeds in metres per second rather than knots.

Frustrating when reality refuses to conform to what we know to be true.

It seems the northern sea ice cap is quite small this summer. (Remove the space from the url)

Oh, btw the story seems to be grossly inaccurate when going to the original source (would have been easy to google the name, Rand):

story seems to be grossly inaccurate when going to the original source

Grossly? From the "original source" website:

Plan A is to wait for a break in the ice.

Plan B is to meet a Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker which will lift Barrabas aboard and carry her through the heavy ice and relaunch her on the other side.

Several days ago I was informed that southerly winds were expected between 3rd and 8th September and that these winds could conceivably clear the ice northeast and thus create a window of opportunity. However, instead we have a cyclone to the north of my position generating storm force northerly winds. We all know that weather forecasting is an inexact science at best.

So he shows a picture of the boat in a safe harbor, and that means what? That he is smart enough to take shelter in a harbor, and thus not a moron?

One risk is that the sea ice reforms at both ends, trapping Barrabas. This is a big risk because there is no way in which an icebreaker can come into the shallow channel to recover the yacht before it is crushed. There is one further major risk. The area attracts large numbers of polar bear and Adrian would rather not find himself on the breakfast menu. Polar bears do present a potential risk even when he is aboard Barrabas, but this risk increases dramatically if the sloop becomes trapped in ice and Adrian has to use his rescue dinghy as a sledge to cross to the land.

I'm sorry, but what is grossly inaccurate, besides this: The Northwest Passage is open?

Posted by Leland at September 6, 2007 07:44 AM

With further understanding, I see the issue is the little evidence that Adrian Flanagan believes heavily in global warming. There seems to be some evidence that he may require it, but not that he meant to prove it's existence.

So there may be hyperbole, but his "source" website isn't clear on the subject, and "The Northwest Passage is open" is still not correct.

He remains in danger of a Darwin Award.

Let me quote the whole article again, since you seem to have forgotten it:
"If the global warming evangelists had the slightest sense of irony, they'd never even attempt things like this. They have no concept of what laughing stocks they make of themselves."

Now, the whole thing is a set up since the guy is no "global warming evangelist". (Nice snark there too again implying that global warming is just a religion.) It's just a guy who tries to sail the passage. It's been sailed before too.

I don't expect the majority of the readers ever to see a correction and they are left with the counterfactual impression from this thing too, that another global warming evangelist has made a laughing stock of himself.

Instead it's Rand himself again, yet another story turns out bogus.

You being in defence of the story is pathetic.

I don't expect this idiotry to end. The blogger has decided that global warming is a religion and will tell stories that say so, even when they are not factual, and will not retract them even when it is shown.

Perhaps you should read the original article and then read what Rand wrote. Even if Adrian Flanagan didn't set out to prove AGW; he was certainly being used by "Global Warming evangelists" (like Prof Rabett) as proof that "Global Warming is Here". They certainly picked a bad hero, and I have no problem laughing at the irony.

Again mz, your links don't tell the same story you do either. The Northwest Passage is still closed... yeah it's been sailed before, so are you saying that as evidence of global cooling that prevents passage now? Indeed, the link you provide argues that the Northwest Passage is "Open" as a sign of global warming. What sweet irony that you provided such a link.
