Three Cheers For Carnivores

Randall Parker:

Carnivorous birds and wolves toil to protect forests from their natural enemies. What great animals. Cheer them on as they kill, kill, kill!

Maybe we need to bring in some wolves to solve the deer problem. But I'd still rather have the venison for myself.

And I should note that I don't read Futurepundit as much as I should. Lots of good stuff there today, from life (and brain--drink coffee!) extension tips and breakthroughs, to the construction costs of nuclear plants.

We don't have wolves here in the NC flatlands, but our new populations of coyotes are thinning the deer a bit. They're also eating cats and dogs though.

Rand are the coyotes in FL yet? They might eat FL armadillos like they do out west.

Coyotes are everywhere (though I never see them). Didn't know there were Florida armadillos, though. I've never seen one. Though I did see one at Lake of the Ozarks over Memorial Day. Lying by the side of the road...

I've not seen any coyotes at our new house, but about 8 years ago my dog's puppies were going missing in ones and twos every night. Eight puppies were down to only 2 in less than a week, so I sleep in my sons bedroom one night with the window open. Wasn't even 10 o'clock when I heard a noise, looked out and spotted a coyote crossing the lawn. I assisted him on his journey with a 125 grain .30 slug through his lungs.

Don't forget the carnivorous vultures that keep our roads clear of decomposing animal carcasses.

Oh, yeah. In fact one of the time-wasters I TiVo regularly is a show on NGC called "Animal Extractors." One case involved ridding an Orlando cemetery of an armadillo that was digging up the ground over people's graves.
