Selective Reporting

More fake news from Iraq?

As it notes, they find it easy to report fake massacres that the US is responsible for, but ignore the real ones perpetrated by the enemy.

Just coincidence, I'm sure.

This reminds me of one of the problems with those studies, published in Lancet, that attempted to estimate how many Iraqi's died over a several year period of time. One of the many problems with the studies is that there's no indication that the authors attempted to look for outside tampering with the results. Their idea of a check was "random" sampling and asking for a death certificate.

What a statement:
we're forced to realize that the Weekly World News is not closing their doors on August 27 because mock journalism is unpopular, but instead because larger news organizations crowded them out of the market.

For certain, fact checking is no longer a feature with certain news organizations. If Iraq ends up a failed state, I put that blame on international agencies, including news organizations, that fail to recognize the current Iraqi government is legitimate. If they did, then before publicizing such a story, someone would have at least called the government and seeked confirmation. That doesn't mean accepting the word of someone who calls them saying they are from the government, but actually touching base with a known credible source.

Anyone notice the end where Confederate Yankee gives a shout out to Michael Yon, in Indonesia?

It just slays me that anyone would accept anything written in the primary media outlets without doing a little research of their own, first. The media have become increasingly irrelevant in today's blogospheric marketplace, and in a desperate attempt to survive, they resort to the mode of "report first", instead of "fact-check".

The sad reality is that the way news should work is that the blogs should be reporting first, and the MSM comes along and fact checks them, not the other way around.
