The Other War
I get a little tired of hearing all the whining from Democrats and other faux defenders of civil liberties over how we treat terror suspects, when the War on (Some) Drugs has had far greater atrocities on civil liberties, like this one, described by Radley Balko, for decades now, and for a much less worthy cause. The cynicism and corruption that this has generated in the nation's police departments and federal enforcement agencies, as they make war on their own citizens, is frightening, and its depth unknown.
As Glenn says, I'd take the Dems more seriously if they'd denounce this war, which truly is "failed," a "quagmire," and one that we have "lost." But that would take political courage.

Hear, Hear!
I'd go further than that though. Not only has the War On Drugs increased police corruption and financed crime syndicates and gangs, the proceeds from illicit drug sales have gone directly to financing Central American warlords and certain 'fringe groups' (who shall not be named) in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

If we're going to bounce around failed wars, the war on drugs does look pretty shabby, but it's not at the top of the list. The war on (some) immigrants is an even greater injustice and even greater failure. It's also a simple way to distinguish libertarians from hypocrites.

Rand: "I get a little tired of hearing all the whining from Democrats and other faux defenders of civil liberties over how we treat terror suspects"
What's "faux" about it, Rand?
"when the War on (Some) Drugs has had far greater atrocities on civil liberties,"
Ah, and since liberals *never* talk about that, your false dilemma makes sense. But putting aside the delirious hyperbole of your remark, feel free to remind us who's been held indefinitely, incommunicado without trial, tortured for years on end, and denied basic human rights as a matter of US government policy due to drug prohibition.
Rand: "The cynicism and corruption that this has generated in the nation's police departments and federal enforcement agencies, as they make war on their own citizens, is frightening, and its depth unknown."
Uh huh. You don't have a problem with torture, unlimited secrecy, unlimited surveillance, unlimited arrest powers, and indefinite detention without trial if the word "terrorism" is stickered on the issue, but the sleaze caused by drug prohibition you find "frightening."
"I'd take the Dems more seriously if they'd denounce this war, which truly is "failed," a "quagmire," and one that we have "lost." But that would take political courage."
Plenty of Democrats, like that "demented dwarf" you just got finished railing against, have supported an end to the war on drugs, but you wouldn't know that because you don't give a shit.
