Blue-Ray Versus HD-DVD Who will win out? Following a market lead wrestled free in February, Blu-ray’s performance is now said to have evolved to the point where nearly three of every four HD discs sold belong to Sony’s format. Moreover, Home Media Magazine’s research, which is built on estimations from movie studios and Nielsen VideoScan point-of-sale records, further supports the notion that consumer choice resides firmly in Blu-ray’s corner. OK, my questions are a) do those numbers include pr0n and b) if not, where is the pr0n industry going? My theory is that whither the pr0n industry, so goeth the rest of the new media world. You don't want p**n in HD. Trust me on this. Posted by K at April 23, 2007 07:17 PMI read an article about 2 months ago wherein the p**n industry indicated they favored HD because the manufacturing process was nearly identical to that of current DVD's (as opposed to the more complicated and expensive Blu-Ray process). More recently, Toshiba, which is leading the HD side and is heavily invested in it, is said to be coming out with more players that are lower priced. Wal-Mart is also coming out with some el cheapo players (well, by current prices anyway), but there is conflicting info about which format they are using. Toshiba also just lowered the price of their 2nd Generation A2 from $499 to $399. At Fry's last week in Sunnyvale CA, Blu-Ray and HD shelves were nearly identical in size. Posted by Norm at April 23, 2007 11:25 PM Porn has already chosen internet for their next generation distribution medium, the transition started almost a decade ago. The format war is over, Hollywood lost. If they do eventually decide to offer a secondary HD format, and given the quality of the cinematography and 'acting' the need is questionable, they will choose the one with an order of magnitude lower setup cost and much lower unit costs. HDDVD. Posted by Adrasteia at April 23, 2007 11:34 PMAh, details, details. Wherever I wrote "HD" in my post above, I meant "HDDVD." Everyone probably got that though. Gotta be more precise. Posted by Norm at April 23, 2007 11:42 PMK: "You don't want p**n in HD." I do. :) Rand: "where is the pr0n industry going?" On my computer.
Sony chased away one of the big pr0n producers so they went to HD. I think their input will be marginal since the internet is superior for their distrubtion anyway. Nobody really wants to see the imperfections so the switch in media will end up meaning more films per disk which is not such a big advantage to pr0n producers since I think their customers might prefer content a la carte. They'll stay with the internet, and if they are smart they'll push for the triple x prefix (odd that the filters on this site blocked my spelling that out with three letter x's) to help self-select themselves out of a lot of trouble. Posted by at April 24, 2007 09:07 AMThe pr0n thing re: HD formats is complete garbage. Firstly, pr0n is on both HD formats, despite what is being reported over and over again from the same flawed source. Secondly, despite what people say, pr0n is not a driver of formats, it's an early adopter. There's a big difference. Unless you can demonstrate to me that a pr0n studio actually participated in the design of either format. Posted by Jon Acheson at April 24, 2007 09:16 AMJon, people mean it's a driver of adoption of a format, not of the design of the format. Post a comment |
