"Gun-Free Zones"

As we saw on Monday, there is no such thing--the only people no allowed guns in such places are the law abiding. Dave Kopel and Glenn Reynolds have thoughts.

Again, this is one freedom that Iraq has even more of than the United States. There are no civilian gun-free zones in Iraq, except the Green Zone. Certainly not the universities. You can bring any weapon you want to Baghdad University: open carry, concealed carry, fully automatic, you name it. You can bring a gun to your teacher's office if you don't like the grade you got.

I don't have a CCW now. But I do carry a wicked pig sticker that is just barely legal length. I've had it measured by the police on a number of occasions. I've even had a few suggest that even though it's legal, maybe I still shouldn't carry it. Well where were those guys when I've had to pull it twice to protect myself? I used to work in some rough parts of town, so I carried it anyway.

If I had a CCW I'd carry anywhere I went, ESPECIALLY places that said not to do so. Those are exactly the places where these things happen. "Gun Free Zones". Did the laws against carrying weapons save those people? NO, because this guy crossed a line where he didn't care what the law was anymore. But would some of these kids be alive if there was a CCW allowance at Va. Tech? Perhaps they would. If legal people having legal guns doesn't keep this kind of thing from happening, how come we never have a mass shooting at a gun show, or a shooting competition, or at a gun shop? Because these shooters go after easy prey. The never go where the shooter KNOWS he might be stopped and / or shot himself. Personally I'd carry everywhere regardless of the stupid signs. I'd rather be in trouble with the law for shooting some nut like this guy, than be dead but "legal". Dead and legal still sounds the same as being just dead to me.

I hold a CWP and I carry. Generally when I come to a place of business that has a "no concealed weapons" sticker on the door, I just turn and go find someone else who wants my business.
