Yes, by the logic presented in the WaPo article, the Union should consider it lost the war the moment Lincoln was assassinated.

This is nonesense...if the logic here were to hold up then one could imply that justice is "dead" in Tarrant county Texas...when three judges were assasinated in their courtroom by a guy who got his weapon through Sherrif security.
The reality of it is that after the bombing, the place was cleaned up and people went back to work...
Just like in TArrant county, the courts opened the next day.
Americans have forgotten what life was like on the frontier.
Ridiculous article.
