Hope For Space Elevators?

Carbon nanotubes seem to be self repairing.

Note that the repair process causes the nanotube to emit carbon gas. I have to wonder how fast it would be at low temperature (you need energy to do that), how the repair process would interact with or be affected by whatever is tying the nanotube to something else, and how fast it would cause a cable made of nanotubes to lose mass or otherwise degrade.
