Orwell At Space.com? I get a daily email from space.com telling me what's the latest on the site. The emails consist of summaries at the beginning, then a more detailed description of the stories with links. Here's today's: In today's issue: Emphasis mine. Note that the first summary description of the story was that the "charged astronaut" had been replaced. But in the more detailed version, there is no mention of her. Nor is there any in the linked story itself. So what happened? Was Nowak assigned to the next flight, and then removed because of her...incident? That seems unlikely to me. She just flew in August--it seems hard to believe that she'd have gotten another flight assignment in less than a year, given the demand for slots (though I suppose it's possible, given that she was at least momentarily treated like a rock star during and right after the flight). If so, and NASA changed its mind, why does Space.com have two different versions of the story in its email notification? Or was it that they got a bogus story that she was originally scheduled on the flight, and then replaced, but it wasn't true, and when they found out, they changed the summary and link, but forgot to fix the supersummary? Inquiring minds want to know. I've categorized this as "Space," but it could just as well have been "Media Criticism." I believe she was assigned to be CAPCOM on that flight. I read somewhere else that they had named someone else for that job. So you are right that she wouldn't fly again that quickly. Posted by Mazoo at February 20, 2007 02:27 PMI agree with Mazoo. Everything I've heard said that she was slated to be CAPCOM. The highlighted portion of the space.com newsletter only mentions that she's being replaced, not what her role was supposed to be. Posted by John Breen III at February 20, 2007 03:00 PMI read that article earlier today. When I first saw the headline, I also had a WTF response. However, it became clear when I read the article at Space.com: NASA has chosen a substitute spacecraft communicator to replace astronaut Lisa Nowak during the upcoming STS-117 shuttle flight to launch next month, mission managers said Thursday. Cathy Koerner, lead shuttle flight director for NASA’s STS-117 mission aboard the Atlantis orbiter, said Thursday that astronaut Terry Virts will take Nowak’s position as lead spacecraft communicator -- or Capcom -- during the upcoming construction mission to the International Space Station (ISS). NASA placed Nowak on a 30-day leave last week after she was charged with attempted murder, attempted kidnapping and other counts stemming from a confrontation with a woman whom police said the astronaut believed to be a romantic rival for the affections of a space shuttle pilot. “Terry was my Capcom during [STS-115], and so he’s familiar not only to me but to this mission and its content and also to the rest of the flight control team,” Koerner said of Virts, referring to NASA’s September 2006 shuttle mission in which astronauts performed similar tasks to those set for STS-117. Posted by Larry J at February 20, 2007 03:09 PMIt should be obvious. Nowak acquired an excess of electrons, or a had electrons removed, and is now a charged astronaut... NASA, always trying to make the spaceways safer, removed her from the mission in order to prevent a dangerous discharge... Posted by Simon Jester at February 22, 2007 10:29 AMPost a comment |
