Unconscious Racism I've long believed that the left, and Democrats, contrary to popular myth, are much more racist than the right and Republicans. It is they, after all, who believe that blacks can't make it without help from the government. Here's an inadvertent demonstration of this paternalism and condescension, from Joe Biden: Mr. Biden is equally skeptical—albeit in a slightly more backhanded way—about Mr. Obama. “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” he said. “I mean, that’s a storybook, man.” The first one. Can you imagine that? What a credit to his race he is. Of course, he is only half black. Maybe that explains it. I suspect that, like M. Kerry, he'll be telling us that it was a "botched joke." You know, this could be the shortest presidential candidacy in history. [Via Yuval Levin] Posted by Rand Simberg at January 31, 2007 08:22 AMTrackBack URL for this entry:

Wow. Is the entire Demo party infected with Kerry-in-mouth disease? Will the blogosphere react like they did to Trent Lotts alledgely racist comments? --Fred Posted by Fred K at January 31, 2007 09:08 AMPerhaps Neal Kynnoch actually said it. Posted by Mike Puckett at January 31, 2007 09:23 AMFrom the context I think it's fair to insert the word "candidate" after "African-American". I disagree with Biden on policies, but I find him to be probably the most refreshingly honest and un-PC politician on either side. Posted by lmg at January 31, 2007 11:19 AMOK, let's give him the benefit of the doubt, and assume he meant "candidate." What does that say about Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Carol Mosely Braun? All this does is cement in black Dem voters' minds that Obama is the "white man's" black man. Posted by Rand Simberg at January 31, 2007 11:22 AMRand, I don't doubt that the left is wildly racist, but I think it's very likely Biden just meant "candidate" -- he is, after all, so died in the wool a politician that I doubt he sizes up any human being according to any other role than "candidate" -- and by "clean" he certainly meant "no skeletons in the closet", unlike, say, that black implosion Carol Moseley Braun. Let's not play gotcha with the poor sap. His goofy ideas rule him out of the Presidency. The mere fact that his brain isn't fully in control of his mouth doesn't (cf. Bush, Jr., 43rd President). Posted by Carl Pham at January 31, 2007 06:57 PMSenator Biden forgets Senator Brooke Of course given his chapmioning of the "first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy" OK, let's give him the benefit of the doubt, and assume he meant "candidate." What does that say about Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Carol Mosely Braun? Carol Mosely Braun is NOT articulate by any definition. And I would not call Jesse Jackson "bright". Oddly enough, the most repulsive of the three -- Al Sharpton, -- seems to match the description best. He is bright and articulate -- like every other successful con man. "Clean"? I had never been near him to smell, but he seems to shave regularly and keep his explosion of hair in order (which can not be easy). "Nice-looking"? I don't think so, but that's entirely subjective. All this does is cement in black Dem voters' minds that Obama is the "white man's" black man. Realistically, can any other black candidate win the presidency? In this generation, anyway? Posted by Ilya at February 1, 2007 06:02 AM"Senator Biden forgets Senator Brooke Of course given his chapmioning of the Always there to defend the indefensible like a good little lickspittle arent you A J-H. Thank you for proving Rand's point. Posted by Mike Puckett at February 1, 2007 07:45 AM"What does that say about Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Carol Mosely Braun?" I don't know, but if it implies that the first two are race baiting extortionists and con men, and the third is an idiot, then it is right on the mark. Would you trust any of them to manage your finances? I wouldn't. Come on, Rand, Biden has an easy out for this. He'll simply state that he plagarized - oopppsss, borrowed - that part of his speech from Hillary. It's not like he goes around promoting others ideas as his own.
