Yes, This Really Is Over The Top

It would be a shame if the Republicans use this ad. It's so mean. It's valid, of course, but still...

The Clinton administration deserves to be mocked every trip of the train, but this isn't the way to do it. The spot is hilarious, though.

It's about time the Republicans got revenge for the little girl and the nuke ad Johnson used against Goldwater. This should just about cover that tab.

Nice move to put it on the Drudge report. Keeps it out of the public eye. Heh heh.

If our context is the little girl and the nuke ad then this is by comparison mild and gentle, humorous even.

But then maybe that's K's point, obliquely.

I agree with K and Mark about this ad vs Johnson's Little Girl/Nuke ad. However, that is also why I think it is bad form for the GOP to use it. There is no reason to compare yourself with the worse aspects of your opposition.

Still, funny ad, but then it would be just as impactful to re-release Team America.

Great ad. If there's one thing that America needs to be reminded of, it's how Bush got North Korea to put their plutonium under lock and key and then Clinton let them unlock that plutonium to build nuclear bombs. Something like that, anyway...

I've read an observation that the GOP is handling this quite intelligently. Refuse to use it so you can claim the moral high-ground, then let Drudge get ahold of it so it goes viral. They get the benefit of it being seen, but can't be held accountable for it:-)

Posted by Jason Bontrager at October 11, 2006 09:50 AM

Roy, why don't you try that again? It's well-known that the NorKs were cheating since 1994, if not earlier.

Posted by Rick C at October 11, 2006 12:51 PM

I don't find this ad "offensive" or "over-the-top". However, YouTube's handling of it is offensive. No wonder they are bought by one of the most leftist companies out there.

Posted by Pete Zaitcev at October 11, 2006 05:04 PM

Okay, I'll try again, minus the sarcasm this time: Clinton failed to prevent North Korea from trying to work toward uranium-based weapons, which could probably be successfully criticized by anyone except supporters of Bush, who also failed to prevent North Korea from working toward uranium weapons and who allowed them to resume working on the plutonium weapons they now have. Seriously, is this the ad you think would win in November? "Clinton tried to bribe North Korea into not building nukes, and it only slowed them down! Vote for more doing nothing instead!"

Of course, by "doing nothing", I mean identifying North Korea as one of three Axis of Evil countries and then invading the easiest target of the three. Did everybody think the other two would just quietly wait for their turns?

Stop stooging for the GOP, simberg.

The GOP didn't use it because despite bipartisan support over the last two decades for destroying America's public schools, the majority of the voters in the country are still smart enough to realise that it's obviously satirical.

What an interesting effort at rewriting history.

Consider the following timeline:

1991 North-South Joint Declaration on Denuclearization issued, where both sides agree that there will be NO reprocessing, NO weapons design, NO weapons development. (Still in force)
1994 Agreed Framework signed
1997 US intelligence (and Colin Powell) indicate that North Korea is already cheating, by expanding their uranium enrichment efforts.
4/02 Bush adheres to Agreed Framework, okaying $95M in fuel oil (per agreement).
11/02 Bush informs IAEA of NK uranium enrichment efforts, after confronting NK on subject (and being told by NK that, yes, we're cheating).
12/02 IAEA asks NK about uranium enrichment. NK boots IAEA inspectors.
3/03 US invades Iraq.

So, Roy, what exactly was it Bush did that "made" NK break the agreement, back in '97? What did Bush do to make NK break the agreement in '02? (Iraq? Yeah, that time travel machine of Kim's must've been it!)

And, here's the $64,000 question: Would you have supported a war with North Korea in December '02? Or are you suggesting that if only we'd given Kim MORE goodies, then everything'd be hunky-dory?

C'mon, Roy, let us in on the secret. What was YOUR secret plan for keeping NK from breaking out of the multiple treaties that they were already cheating on?
