The Best Team Money Can Buy And they get blown off in three straight in the playoffs by a team that lost 119 games three years ago. The Bronx Bombers got bombed. So much for Jane Bernstein's subway series prediction. And I suspect that, given the rampant Yankee hatred in most places outside Gotham, there was great rejoicing throughout the land last night. [Update about 9 AM Hawaii time] I'll be pulling for the Cards now, in addition to the Tigers. I think that it would be really cool if we could have a repeat of the 1968 series. Ah, Rand. You misunderstand me. I did want a subway series, but only so the Mets could humiliate the Yankees at home. I have as much Yankee hatred as the next girl. I'm a Dodgers fan, and I was pulling for the Mets anyway, who swept them in three straight, just because you KNOW the bums aren't going to be able to keep it together against the Yankees. You still have to get past the A's. Good luck with that. I don't see St Louis giving the Mets much trouble in the NLCS, but I could be wrong about that - the Cards seem to keep playing good baseball in the post season most years. Posted by Jane Bernstein at October 8, 2006 10:37 AMWhile I am from St Louis and I appreciate your support, I would urge you to avoid undue dissapointment by not setting any hopes on the Cards this year. We lack consistancy in the bullpen and the "O" won't get you to the big one. Posted by TBinSTL at October 9, 2006 01:46 AMI'll be pulling for the Cards now, in addition to the Tigers. You've actually been following baseball this season, and I haven't. That may explain why your sympathies and my predictions are 180 degrees opposite -- I'm predicting the Series will be Mets vs. A's. Don't ask me why, 'cause I don't know. Posted by McGehee at October 9, 2006 05:15 AMI'm a born Cardinals fan myself (E. Arkansas upbringing), and I'd like to see a 1968 repeat too, but without that pesky loss in game 7. Cardinals fans have had more than enough game 7 losses over the years, with 1985 standing out in particular as the worst sports-spectator experience I've ever had. Like TB above, though, I worry about the team's depth this year, what with all the injuries. But what the hey - the years that they seem to be perfect haven't worked out for us, so maybe the team will win ugly this year. Posted by Derek Lowe at October 10, 2006 08:06 AMI had no problem at all with that "pesky loss," Derek. ;-) Like 1968 after the riots, Detroit really needs the morale boost. Of course, also like then, it would probably be better to start addressing its actual problems, rather than lulling the people with bread and baseball. Posted by Rand Simberg at October 10, 2006 08:18 AMRand says: Detroit really needs the morale boost. Fire Matt Millen and give the Lions to someone who can run a team. Get them to understand that losing is NOT okay. Both Lions and Arizona Cardinals (yeah, I know its football, but its still true)have cultivated a culture of losing that saps the teams. I'm happy I'm a Seattle fan. Posted by Mac at October 10, 2006 08:21 AMI HATE replays of previous World Series will all the inane banter that it produces among the broadcasters. As if they haven't enough material to blabber about in hearing themselves talk!!! Posted by Sharpshooter at October 12, 2006 11:30 AMPost a comment |
