Truth In Flying

I'd enjoy this pre-flight announcement a lot more than the stuff they usually say. Speaking of which, I'm flying to San Jose this afternoon to attend Space 2006. Blogging may be light this week.

Please switch off all mobile phones, since they can interfere with the aircraft's navigation systems. At least, that's what you've always been told. The real reason to switch them off is because they interfere with mobile networks on the ground, but somehow that doesn't sound quite so good. On most flights a few mobile phones are left on by mistake, so if they were really dangerous we would not allow them on board at all, if you think about it.

YES!!! Let the truth be told!! However, at crusing altitude, much of the Sprint network can't be reached, thus causing the phone to enter search mode which drains the battery quickly. I think the 9/11 victims had better connectivity because the terrorist dropped to a few thousand feet above the deck.

ROFL!

At least the passengers would be paying attention all the way through - for once.

I tend to zone out after I've located all the exits anywhere near me - which I do on my own as soon as I get on board and sit down.

I think there was a halfway successful water crash landing that was caught on video. I think it was a Kenyan airliner that ran out of fuel. It certainly didn't seem to stay as intact or float as well as the little safety cards make it out to be.

Really though, I can see the slides of being of limited use in situations where a airliner slides off the end of a runway into a adjacent body of water. There was an incident with a airliner going off the end of a icy runway I think. Also, a 747 went into the water after it slide off from heavy rains over in Asia somewhere.

Don't forget about laptops. Remember the Dilbert storyline where the Pointy Haired Boss causes a plane crash by using his laptop during the landing sequence?

I'm thinking they had James Morrow's Veritas in mind ...

I'm thinking they had James Morrow's Veritas in mind ... flying off to Camp Ditch-the-Kids, perhaps?
