Captain Robert Gray (of Grays Harbor) of the ship Columbia. About the only major topographic feature of the Northwest that Vancouver missed.

Posted by Raoul Ortega at September 2, 2006 11:04 AM

Oops. I meant to say Grays Harbor is named for him, not that he was from there.

Posted by Raoul Ortega at September 2, 2006 11:07 AM

Ronald Reagan, obviously.

Posted by Brian Swiderski at September 2, 2006 11:08 AM

And his expedition was sponsored by...?

Posted by Rand Simberg at September 2, 2006 11:11 AM

"Ronald Reagan, obviously.

Posted by Brian Swiderski at September 2, 2006 11:08 AM"

So speaketh our resident lickspitle.

Posted by Mike Puckett at September 2, 2006 11:28 AM

BS you are SUCH an idiot.

Posted by Cecil Trotter at September 2, 2006 12:43 PM

BS-

I'm curious what motivates you. I could go to Daily Kos and throw out what those readers would think was useless blather if I wanted to, but I decided it's not worth my time. I'm pretty sure you don't think you're changing any minds around here, so what's the point?

Posted by Tom at September 2, 2006 03:40 PM

He's like that turd that just won't flush.

It's gonna have to soak for a while . . .

Posted by Dave G at September 2, 2006 06:29 PM

Isn't the mouth of Columbia encircled by the lips of the woman holding the torch and the mink stole? "Discovered" is a loaded word that implies the barbarians don't count. If rediscovered counts, it's Bartle-by which has the number one Google listing for mouth of columbia for the Columbia Encyclopedia listing of "trench mouth" http://www.bartle by.com/65/tr/trenchmo.html.

Posted by Sam Dinkin at September 2, 2006 08:28 PM

Thats not Columbia, Thats Minerva.

Minerva is the one holding the torch in the Columbia opening splash.

Zeus had one cool headache! Hera got no claim on that child.

Posted by Mike Puckett at September 2, 2006 09:30 PM

Downside is that Zeus couldn't get Hera to share in child support.

FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT!! or was it Benjamin Franklin?

Raoul had the correct answer for all the Euro-centric historians.

The actual original discovery was by a salmon named "Quincey", some 11 million years ago. He was looking for a Starbucks, but coffee hadn't even been discovered yet. Quincey was attempting to do research into electricity and kites. He knew that a good Machiodo half-caf Latte Frappe with a double shot of chocolate shavings, would get the old creative juices flowing. Alas, before he could find Starbucks, electricity or kites he was eaten by a bear.

I've seemingly lost touch with reality.

I'm voting for Kennewick Man.

"BS you are SUCH an idiot."

How dare you impugn the memory of Ronald Reagan like that, suggesting he didn't discover the cure for cancer and the mouth of the Columbia River. Such anti-Americanism is bound to embolden the terrorists.

Posted by Brian Swiderski at September 3, 2006 09:43 PM

"I'm curious what motivates you."

I made a casual joke, and judging by the shrill response it apparently hit a nerve.

"I could go to Daily Kos and throw out what those readers would think was useless blather if I wanted to, but I decided it's not worth my time."

Why not go there and discuss things intelligently, perhaps with humor supporting legitimate points?

"I'm pretty sure you don't think you're changing any minds around here, so what's the point?"

It's just part of my character to fix things that are wrong. That could involve convincing people to change their minds or just explaining why an idea or conclusion is incorrect. Or, in some cases, it can involve satire, humor, reductio ad absurdum examples, or reciprocity to help educate the morally impaired about the value of respect.

Posted by Brian Swiderski at September 3, 2006 10:35 PM

...to help educate the morally impaired about the value of respect.

Those of us in the morally impaired category like being that way. So scuttle home to Koz and the other morally superior beings, Please. That seems respectful enough.

Posted by Steve at September 4, 2006 04:14 PM

B.S,, BTW, FO

Posted by Steve at September 4, 2006 04:16 PM

"Those of us in the morally impaired category like being that way."

And if the universe was limited to you and your id, that would be important.

"So scuttle home to Koz and the other morally superior beings, Please."

What, so people like you and Rand can echo each other's delusions to a crescendo until some lunatic takes them seriously and acts on them? Say any damn lunatic thing you want, but if I think you're spreading lies and hate and encouraging violence, I'm going to speak up. And I don't have to cradle my thoughts by surrounding myself with likeminded people, unlike some I could mention.

And all this because I made a casual joke about the Reagan personality cult, which wouldn't have provoked such a reaction if it weren't true. What exactly is wrong with you people?

"B.S,, BTW, FO"

Tell you what. When the troops are safe at home, the Constitution is reinstated, and the occupant of the White House knows the Earth wasn't created 6,000 years ago, I'll let you sick bastards off the hook and shut my mouth in contented silence.

Posted by b at September 5, 2006 04:32 AM

BS-

I won't trouble you with a response again. It wasn't my intent to be shrill. Just assume that you've change someone's heart and mind, and go about your Kool-Aid drinking. Good luck with your comedy career. Given your "casual joke", you're going to need it. On the bright side, the more time you spend typing here, the less time you have to "help" in other ways.

Posted by Tom at September 5, 2006 05:29 AM

And all this because I made a casual joke about the Reagan personality cult

Hint, Brian. "Jokes" are supposed to be funny, not stupid, and have something to do with the topic at hand. Maybe you'll learn that someday, but there's no reason to think so.
