Hope He Didn't Breed
Here's a pretty spectacular Darwin Award finalist--a man who took a sledgehammer to a grenade. No apparent big loss, but sadly, he badly injured a co-worker as well.

Oh yeah, the scrap metal is the valuable part. It just wouldn't make sense that the guy would try to remove the explosive contents from one grenade and another grenade to make one big explosive.

That can't be ruled out...but if so, he clearly didn't fully read the 'How to Dismantle and Re-Use Military Explosives' manual very thoroughly.
I mean, the first page of such a hypothetical manual should have one word, in big block capitalized letters:
CAREFULLY!
...then go into detail.
But before pursuing the explosives recovery theory further, be mindful of this corollary of Murphy's law, which could be considered a special case of Occam's Razor:
'Never ascribe to malice, that which can be explained through stupidity.'
Maliciousness is out there in spades, to be sure, but stupidity is still so very much more likely....
(Though in all fairness, they're not mutually exclusive, either.)

Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Just like that river twisting through a dusty land
And when she shines she really shows you all she can
Oh Rio Rio dancer gave me a hand grenade!!
I know a hand grenade and an RPG are not the same. But YOU try to find a song where you can fit RPG into the chorus.

RPG's have a piezoelectric detonater in the tip of the nosecone that is impact triggered.
Still, they aren't suppsed to be armed until it is fired.....

I once heard about a guy who used a rifle bullet as a nail for hammering an extra hole in his belt.
