Tell Me

I hate that stupid commercial for the oil and natural gas industry, in which a bunch of people say "Tell me about this, tell me about that, tell me the truth." It makes them sound like idiots. It also makes whoever came up with the ad sound like idiots. I don't expect an industry to tell me things--I expect an industry to provide me with what I need at an affordable price.

What is the point?

"Why does the world wide demand for oil dictate what I pay for gas?"

Supply and demand you idiot!

The point is to depict the oil industry as other than evil.

Well, it leaves me cold, because I've never thought of the oil industry as evil.

Posted by Rand Simberg at August 11, 2006 10:39 AM

Neither have I Rand, and those who do think they're evil won't be swayed by these silly commercials.

Posted by Cecil Trotter at August 11, 2006 11:41 AM

I had the same reaction. I don't want an oil company that is newage and emphasizes alternative forms of energy (which aren't as efficient, BTW). Damnit, I want an oil company that will chop down rainforests in order to provide gasoline at the cheapest cost to consumers.

How is that the "same reaction" as Rand and I "jschan"?

Posted by Cecil Trotter at August 11, 2006 12:14 PM

IIRC, it's a BP/Amoco commercial. How about "tell me how to you're going to fix that pipeline"? ;^)

They're trying to look like part of the ANSWER, not part of the PROBLEM.

I'm not fooled. Not so long as gas is $3.00 a gallon.

"Tell me....How can I siphon gas out of my neighbors car?"

They aren't the answer or the problem.

You're the one demanding petroleum distillate at $3.00 a gallon, you're the problem. If that price is too high, stop sending them signals that it isn't.

There is a trend for corporations of all kinds to appear "socially conscious." Sometimes that leads them into odd associations. I go into that in more detail in a past blog post here:
