Deja Vu Why is America waiting to be attacked by Tehran? What is the explanation for America's willful fiction that the United Nations Security Council can engineer an accommodation in Lebanon, when it is vivid to every member state that this is a replay of September 1938, when Europe fed Hitler the Sudetenland as the U.N. now wants to feed the jihadists the sovereignty of Israel? As the author points out, as is often the case, we won't start this war, but as usual, we'll have to finish it. [Update] Listening to Sky News describing British Muslims who claim that they are Muslims first, and British citizens second. Sounds like it's time to deport some folks. United Nations Security Council cannot engineer an accommodation in Lebanon. IDF combat engineers going in "Okinawa style" can. Posted by Bill White at August 10, 2006 05:57 AMBill, I wonder how involved are the Iranians in the foiled plot to blow up planes out of Heathrow? Was this the Aug 22nd plan? It seems the Brits let this run out pretty far in order to catch as many nutburgers as possible. The 22nd is just 12 days away. Posted by Steve at August 10, 2006 07:51 AMChasing women and children off of the cliffs? That was at Saipan as I recall, and was voluntary by the jumpers. As for the UK hysteria, it appears the threat is based on techniques used in a Phillipines air bomb set off in 1994 that did not cause loss of aircraft. Nitro soaked cotton balls detonated by electronics, such as a Casio watch. A very real threat but why (12 years after the technique was first used) is it now such a surprise? = = = For the record, I fully support the IDF cleaning out Hezbollah using ground troops. Air power by itself will be insufficent to accomplish the needful. In my armchair opinion. And, I am indeed a leftie. Although some here have suggested I may not be a moonbat leftie. Cool. ;-) Posted by Bill White at August 10, 2006 07:59 AMIs there a definite August 22 plan? I read the Bernard Lewis article the other day in the Journal, woke up to the news of the UK arrests this morning and figured they went together. I hope the police and intelligence communities are looking at links to Iran as well as al-Quaida. Is there a definite August 22 plan? Who knows? Posted by Rand Simberg at August 10, 2006 08:06 AMWhy is America waiting to be attacked by Tehran? Because they have their hands full with the "world war in Iraq". Laura, I saw reports that the suspects are Pakistani. But the details are still sketchy. If it is Pakistanis and not Iranians what do we do? Posted by Bill White at August 10, 2006 08:39 AMIf it is Pakistanis and not Iranians what do we do? This is getting off-topic from Rand's question, but the answer is that it will be more three-card diplomacy: Invade, insult, or ignore. If it's Pakistanis, probably ignore. If you think we're "ignoring" Pakistan, you're a fool. I would assume, in fact, that it was Pakistan that helped tip off the Brits to the plot. Posted by Rand Simberg at August 10, 2006 08:50 AMIf it is Pakistanis and not Iranians what do we do? I don't think their ethnic origin matters. What matters is what government, if any, supported their activities. The Iranian government is certainly smart enough to employ Pakistani jihadis if it wants to -- say, in order to outfox silly people who equate ethnic origin with political allegiance. Posted by Carl Pham at August 10, 2006 09:52 AMBill, After all Okinawa and Saipan, are close, as in, on the same planet, it was American troops killing innocent Asians, Pearl Harbor was our fault and FDR allowed it to happen, and finally we back Israel because of the Zionists running our country. It doesn't make sense. But it is how the left / anti-American crowd thinks. I was listening to Michael Smerconish's show on line this morning. They started taking calls about this thing in London. The very first caller said the whole thing was trumped up. BECAUSE, here it comes, because Joe Leiberman lost his primary race. "W" trumped up the whole thing to show we were still in a war with terror and to show the voters we need people like Leiberman. Is that any crazier than what I said? I had my islands wrong. I made a mistake. But facts do not mean anything today. We are allowed to say anything we want, so long as "W" is the bad guy and America and Americans suck. Posted by Steve at August 10, 2006 10:52 AMConsidering the situation, I think the US has no choice but to play the UN game. Debate in Turtle Bay while you quietly support the Israelis in their fight against Hezbollah. Given political realities Bush can't come out and say "this war should continue until Hezbollah is wiped off the map". But we can buy time for Israel to do this. BTW - faced with the choice I'd probably say that I'm a Christain first and a US citizen second. But then my Christianity doesn't encourage or require me to oppose the US. Posted by KeithK at August 10, 2006 12:51 PM"Sounds like it's time to deport some folks." I disagree. A significant minority of "British" muslims think the law and government ought to be replaced with Sharia. A minority of those are doing something about it. This is generally referred to in law as treason. Sounds like it's time to hang some folks. Posted by Fletcher Christian at August 11, 2006 04:49 AMPost a comment |
