Dismaying

I'd sure like to break this pattern.

I do too and not simply because I'm not a fan of Mr. McCain. Just choosing the next in line is a really bad way to choose nominees. It's worked out pretty well for the Republican party in terms of winning elections. I want the better candidate to be selected not just the one with the most seniority or time served.

One of the great things about the 2008 election is that there is no incumbent or sitting VP in the race. It should be wide open. But punditry abhors a vacuum so there's a need to appoint front-runers as early as possible.

To be honest, I don't think it's good that we're talking about presidential nominees this early anyway. I wish we could leave the campaign for 2008, preferrably in the Spring. But I wish for lots of improbable things.

I'd also like to break the Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton pattern.

I'd like to break the tax-cut-and-spend, tax-and-spend, tax-and-spend, tax-cut-and-spend cycle.

I wonder what basis is used for determining who's "2nd". The NRO post doesn't indicate. RWR wasn't vice president or anything comparable AFAIK. Nor was W or Dole...

"Second" is who comes out number two in the Republican primary.
