Ruminating on Shuttle Safety
Wayne Hale, manager of the space shuttle program, shares some thoughts and emails to the team on NPR this morning. I believe Hale has mismanaged the shuttle program.

I understand your point from the concept of a capitalist view of a socialist space program. However, I think you are a bit off topic that Wayne Hale has mismanaged the shuttle program. If Wayne Hale had his way, we would have pictures of Columbia on orbit (page 140 CAIB volume 1). I'll agree that Wayne Hale is as much a bureaucrat as any at NASA, but after that, I think you cut him some slack.

Hmmm. $10B, two missions. How is this a good socialist program? There needs to be economizing even in socialism. Perhaps we want more drug benefits, social security payments or, come to think of it, space access from our paternalistic state than the shuttle program has delivered. At least France delivers behemoths that people of ordinary means can actually fly in.
