Creeping Technology You thought the Mini was a small car? Behold, the nanocar. Sounds a little too small for me, but it should get great mileage: The nano-car's molecular motor contains a pair of bonded carbon molecules that rotate in one direction if illuminated by a specific wavelength of light. After fixing the molecular engine to the car's chassis and shining a light on it, Tour's team confirmed that the engine was running by using nuclear magnetic resonance to monitor the position of the hydrogen atoms within it... You don't say... Even if they can get them working, I'll bet they still can't find a parking space in Manhattan. Posted by Rand Simberg at April 17, 2006 08:43 AMTrackBack URL for this entry:

Wow, honest scientists. Too bad the global warming scientists aren't as honest about their research. Posted by Astrosmith at April 17, 2006 10:27 AM"Even if they can get them working, I'll bet they still can't find a parking space in Manhattan." LOL, Rand. I won't take that bet.... Posted by Barbara Skolaut at April 17, 2006 04:03 PM2 nanometers? couldn't that also be explained by the affect of the light itself driving the tiny mass forward, without there being any rotation? Posted by wickedpinto at April 17, 2006 04:13 PM"We think the car would drive along, but we wouldn't be able to see it and I don't think people would believe us," I remember seeing a demonstration of a MEMS device (safety lock for a nuclear device). The presenters noted that they had problems getting people to believe that their images were from an actual running device. The tolerances were so small, that the image looked like a CAD/CAM drawing. To aid the presentation, they placed dust mites on the gears, which looked like Godzilla attacking the MEMS device. Even an ameba would drawf a nanocar. Posted by Leland at April 17, 2006 08:56 PMbut "nanocars" are So MINUTE in mass, that wouldn't the energy of the light/visual e/m energy be enough to MAYBE be the thing that pushes the car forward? I'm not scientist, however, (this is a personal story) I've always said the whole time/accelleration thing is bullshit. because the only proofs of the time/speed math were based on NOT JUST on time and speed, but also on energy. Einsteins star that was in the wrong place, had been manipulated by HOW MUCH GRAVITY! and how much EM energy? The whole "cesium clocks" being off by microseconds, flew threw how many neutrino's, and other energy sources that can violate lead? Energy acts on energy, and energy acts on mechanical devices, ESPECIALLY mechanical devices. Did the nano motors rotate because they could move 2 nano meters in a minute? or did they move cuz the small energy of the LIGHT drove them forward and the rotated because of friction? Posted by wickedpinto at April 17, 2006 10:29 PMI think I'd need just a little more legroom. And headroom. And elbow room. And wrist room. And shoulder room. And torso room.
