The Other Civil War How come the media isn't 24/7 about this "civil war"? Eyewitnesses said most of those wounded in Monday's fighting in the Gaza Strip were policemen who tried to prevent Fatah gunmen from taking over government buildings and security installations. The two sides exchanged gunfire for several hours in scenes that many Palestinians said were reminiscent of the civil war in Lebanon in the 1970s. Probably because they can't figure out a way to pin it on America, and George Bush. They're probably even having trouble fingering Israel for it, though that's usually a piece of cake for them. Excerpt: Rand Simberg notes the other civil war and queries the lack of notice within the MSM. Precisely the same reason why the French "wildings" of last year received so little mention in the MSM. French authorities vs. Muslim immigrants, twist and turn as we might, have no possible blame-GWB angle. Nothing to see here, move right along. Posted by Steve Y. at March 21, 2006 08:20 PMWell, heck, we've got failed states all over the world that the media doesn't deem worthy to mention all that often. Mexico, anyone? As to fences. My guess is if we had a proper border between us and them, as Israel has placed between themselves and the suicide-bombers, the reporters would be bored that much more with our troubled neighbors. Just another third world basket case that we don't talk about. Sudan sucks? Yawn. Mexico sucks? Yawn. People =should= yawn to hear about corrupt third world "palestine" sucking. It shouldn't be "news" if anything such information could better be called "olds". Posted by shazbat at March 21, 2006 09:54 PMProbably because there aren't 130,000 Americans in Palestine. Posted by Jason Dozier at March 21, 2006 09:55 PMThat wouldn't account, would it Jason, for the kid-glove treatment Arafat always got from MSM? Gaza civil-war gets the same soft treatment because it is Arafat's legacy, and Arafat was a friend to the last two Democrat presidents. Posted by Buddy Larsen at March 21, 2006 10:05 PMShazbat says "Probably because there aren't 130,000 Americans in Palestine." Mork says "Imagine that! No Americans and still they're killing each other! May be some sort of pattern there for the more imaginative among us to decifer!" Decypher? Decifer? You get the idea. LOL Posted by Shazbat Nanoo Nanoo at March 21, 2006 10:12 PMIf you are christian and break a protestors professionaly designed anti-bush placard in the US, you are "rioting." If you burn embassies, kill the people you don't like, kill the families of people you don't like, threaten to burn the people you don't like, but can't get to, and are muslim, you are protesting. I'm still working out how to process this on a logical level, but then again, logic NEVER answers the questions I found important, thats why I'm a dropout. Posted by wickedpinto at March 21, 2006 11:15 PMThe answer's obvious - it's not our war. Most wars get little play in the US, for the same reason. But what you wann be Aljezeera and Haaretz are covering it? Posted by TokyoTom at March 22, 2006 04:55 AMThe answer's obvious - it's not our war. Posted by TokyoTom at March 22, 2006 04:55 AMProbably because there aren't 130,000 Americans in Palestine. Because, among other reasons, there's no such place as "Palestine." Posted by Rand Simberg at March 22, 2006 05:08 AMOTOH, in contrast to the "insurgency" in Iraq, the "Fatah gunmen" were at least trying to take over government buildings and security installations rather than just blowing themselves and others up - seems a lot closer to civil-war-like behavior to me. Posted by Jamie at March 22, 2006 05:39 AMShazbat says "Probably because there aren't 130,000 Americans in Palestine." That wasn't Shazbat, you loon. Comment authors' names appear below their comments, not above. Posted by McGehee at March 22, 2006 06:47 AMI believed all along that when Israel withdrew and shut them out, the Palestinians would turn on each other. Looks like it's happening. Frankly, it's the best of a lot of sorry prospects for peace in that region, to let them eat each other alive until they can't fight anymore. Posted by RebeccaH at March 22, 2006 08:54 AMRe RebeccaH "...let them eat each other alive until they can't fight anymore." Well, that largely worked for the occident for most of the time since 1492(defeat of the moors in Andalusia(Spain)..), but the world has shrunk since then. Timbuctou is not longer timbuctou, it's right next door, thanks to Boeing/Airbus, TV/telecommunications, generalized wealth, increased capability of just a few persons to cause great mayhem(C4, Semtex, airplanes used as missiles...). As for them fighting themselves to death, well, they've been at it for 13 centuries and they're still there, only today modern agriculture and medicin mean a great many more of their brood survive to be come angry young men or submissive breeder units. Posted by shazbat at March 22, 2006 11:44 AMWow, McGehee, way to address his comment. Posted by Rick C at March 22, 2006 11:46 AMTokyo Tom asked "But what you wann be Aljezeera and Haaretz are covering it?" A quick look at the alJazeera website would indicate they are not. Doesn't fit the company line--US is bad and cause of all the suffering in the region. Posted by Neil Bacon at March 22, 2006 12:37 PMI wasn't addressing his comment, Rick -- only his reading comprehension. What was there about my response to him that led you to believe I was trying to address his comment? Posted by McGehee at March 22, 2006 07:19 PMPost a comment |
