The difference between a community and a city is that the city is largely anonymous. This has some advantages (such as a degree of privacy), and some disadvantages (such as increased crime). Technology, especially communication technology, is starting to eat into that anonymity though, with interesting results. What will a world look like where everyone is always connected, where everyone carries around cameras and microphones, where everyone carries around the power of a supercomputer? How will that affect crime? How will that affect ordinary society and culture? It will be fascinating to see how all of this turns out.
