We Don't Need No Stinkin' Policy

That's what a supposed spokes(wo)man for the Donkeys says:

It was thus curiously refreshing to hear a Democrat admit what everyone knows: the Dems have no policy and see no reason to offer one. The particular context was the war in Iraq. Interviewing Rosen on this evening's Hardball, Chris Matthews asserted: "I don't think your [your?] party has a policy."

Acknowledged Rosen: "It doesn't have a policy. It doesn't need to have a policy. What's the point of a Democratic policy?"

Going to break, a palpably shocked Matthews exclaimed: "I can't believe you said that!"

Believe it, Chris.

Hm... is this the same Hilary Rosen that used to be head of the RIAA? For a while she was pretty much public enemy no.1 for the slashdot crowd.

The Democrats are in the same position as the Tory party in Britain. Blair and Bush have occupied the centrist position while also dominating one wing. Subsequently, the Torys are basically offering a "me too" candidate and the Democrats have a "don't ask don't tell" policy about their policies.

She's right. What would be the point of nailing yourself down? Their strategy for the last three years has been to be non-committal, and look very concerned. It hasn’t been particularly effective, but what choice do you have when your constituency is all over the map. One wing is as anti-war and anti-establishment as the hippies of the sixties. Another wing is only interested in the wages and job security of its members. Still another is only interested in how they will vote on reparations. As a party they are collectively schizophrenic and in some cases divergent.

Curiously, the official transcript has since been posted, and it seems almost entirely different from Finkelstein's account:

I didn't see the show myself though, so I have no idea which is accurate.
