Stifling Of Dissent

I...errr...don't blame John Ashcroft:

To my knowledge, not a single Democratic office-holder, in Minnesota or elsewhere, has disassociated himself from the Minnesota Democratic Party's position that it is "un-American" to support our government's policies in Iraq, and that expressions of such support should be banned from the airways.

I'll say this, primarily because I think the same should be said in the reverse when dealing with comments by Ann Coulter and Pat Robinson, the Minnesota DNC does not speak for majority of Democrats. In Texas, many Republicans have problems with the state RNC.

That said, one issue and one observation:
Issue: If a democrat candidate seeks money and endorsement from the Minnesota DNC while it maintains that position, then I think the position by default is accepted by the candidate.

Observation: Since it is the DNC, Powerlines point that not a single Democratic office-holder has disassociated seems to be a fair complaint. Again, this is especially true if they used funds from the state DNC.

So, if the Minnesota DNC doesn't like something, it should be banned from the airwaves.

Well, thank goodness they're only whining about pro-military, pro-Iraq ads. Lord knows what they might do if the subject under discussion were anti-Democrat cartoons. >:-(

Leland, I don't think you can expect Rebublicans to publicly disassociate themselves from Ann Coulter and Pat Robertson because those two are private citizens, not office holders or political party representatives. Not that I agree with either but they hold no official position as oppsed to a state DNC chairman.

I say this as neither a die-hard Democrat or Republican; is the Democractic Party determined to alienate _everybody_ in the country? First rule of getting out of a hole ....

So it's not only OK to call support of the war un-American, it's the party platform in Minnesota to say un-American.

But if anyone questions the anti-war crowds patriotism, without ever saying un-American, that person is against free speech, and is in effect being un-American?

...that's some catch, that Catch-22.

Posted by Steve at February 20, 2006 03:22 PM

Bill, I concede your point.

Posted by Leland at February 20, 2006 05:19 PM

Used to be they'd call you un-american for being a communist. Now they call you un-american for NOT being a communist. Yeesh.

Posted by Robin Goodfellow at February 20, 2006 11:09 PM

Problem here is that anyone who supports the war is un-american and should be condemned. Do I question their patriotism? Never. That they are not patriotic simply goes without saying, or questioning. Minnesota Democrats stand first with MoveOn and our other Progressive allies to defang this fascist military and those treasonous families who support them. And let this be a warning to Republicans and Reagan Democrats. Leave, you have no home in Minnesota.

Z-Man,

I can prove conclusively to you that you are wrong about the military being fascist by asking you a few questions.

1) Are you alive?

2) Are you currently imprisioned for your political beliefs?

3) Is there a Jack Boot sticking up your ass?

If the answer to all of the above is no, your hypotheses is false.

No doubt your total lack of patroitism has deprived you of the ability to utilize simple logic to test your specious hypotheses.

I am glad I could set you strait and save your furtehre episodes of dirt eating and moon barking.

PS

Good satire Z-Man!
