What, No Vichy Britain? Non-Americans, and particularly French non-Americans, are fond of noting how ignorant Americans supposedly are of the rest of the world and history. Which makes it all the more ironic that the French foreign minister apparently doesn't know that Hitler never conquered Britain: Needless to say, Douste-Blazy's question was met by his hosts with amazement. "But Monsieur le minister," Le Canard quoted the ensuing conversation, "England was never conquered by the Nazis during World War II." Well, I suppose that he should at least be given some credit for deigning to visit that "sh**ty little country," Israel, and the Holocaust museum. It's easy to see why the French Non-Americans see us the way they do. They spend so much time running away and not looking over their shoulders to see what's going on. Retreat is probably a french word. Whatever happened to those who were part of the resistance? I would think they would despise those that seek to appease over those that act to preserve peace through force. Posted by Mac at September 19, 2005 02:34 PMHard to see reality with all those Vichy flags (weren't those the ones with a white insignia and white stripes on a white background?) flapping in the breeze! Of course, the linked article says this moron was health minister during last year's Katrina-times-15 heat wave disaster... - Eric. Posted by Eric S. at September 19, 2005 07:13 PMYou've got to love the French (not). I think all of the finger-pointing is a symtom of French Surrender Syndrome. It's designed to destract us from their efforts to find their next enemy to cave in to. Posted by Greg at September 19, 2005 07:45 PMWe can't be everywhere, can we? Not that we didn't at least try, but... Posted by Ralf Goergens at September 20, 2005 05:20 AMReminds me of the Clinton-Gore visit to Monticello, where Gore didn't recognize busts of (IIRC) George Washington and Ben Franklin. History being a fictional construct by patriarchic white power elites to maintain their control, of course there's no reason (for Lefties) to know anything about it. Posted by McGehee at September 20, 2005 06:44 AMAnother German invasion of France is long overdue. Except this time they get to keep it. Posted by Andy Freeman at September 20, 2005 07:25 AMRetreat is probably a french word. Well what do you know. From my dictionary, turns out that it came over with the Normandy invasion as Old French "retraire" which means "to draw back". Actually Hitler did invade the Channel Islands, which are part of the UK (e.g. Jersey). Of course, he did not invade Great Britain proper. Although a land invasion (Seelöwe) could have happened had the Luftwaffe been able to smash the RAF. Oh yeah, for those mocking about Germany invading France, I wouldn't be joking about stuff like this. Not after the Commies got twice the number of representatives they did last election, there is rampant unemployment in former East Germany, and the votes are so fragmented it is making it look like this is the Weimar Republic again. Gojira: So, Horst Kohler is a senile old man in his seventies? And Germany is faced with massive unemployment after an incredible period of hyperinflation had wiped out people's savings? And is it Angela Merkel you are accusing of being a neo-Nazi? Or are you drawing a parallel to Herr Westerwelle? As far as I can tell, the main "parallels" that inspire your "concern" is that the people in question speak German. But thanks for your deep and penetrating analysis.
