Good News For Bill Clinton
They may have finally found a cure for herpes--licorice (sorry, subscription required). You can't just eat it, though--you have to mainline it:
Researchers at New York University ran lab tests on white blood cells, some of which were infected with the herpes virus. Exposing the infected cells to the licorice ingredient, glycyrrhizic acid, shuts down LANA. That starts a chain reaction of biochemical changes in the white blood cells, leading to their suicide and the virus' death. The uninfected cells showed no detrimental effects from glycyrrhizic acid, the researchers report in the March Journal of Clinical Investigation.
Cool.

How the hell did someone come up with that idea? That sounds like one of those things you come up with when your either high or drunk. "Ok, this is great! No! Wait.... bwhahaa..... ok, seriously, we'll take some licorice... What? No! You can't eat it yet. Hmm... I am hungry all of a sudden. What was I talking about again?... Ooo... what a cute bunny rabbit..."

Found quite a few articles from back in February that mention the possibility of using glycyrrhizic acid (one of the main parts of licorice) to get rid of latent viral infections in patients, with specific mention of the herpes virus. Glycyrrhizic acid is also one of the main ingredients in a number of topical herpes ointments and sprays.
That said, I've read articles in the past mentioning how over 90% of humans have been found to have some form of the herpes virus by the time they reach 65 years of age, and how it remains one of the most prevalent viral infections around. Knocking this virus out will not only help improve the lives of many, but will hopefully produce some additional insight into killing off other virii.

Hmm. Chicken pox is in the same family, wonder if this is a cure for shingles too.

It's not the first time they say they've found the cure. I'm fed up with this crap. I've tried whole bunch of medicines but none really helps.
