I Hate When That Happens A rogue iceberg broke Antarctica. Way to go, H2O. I guess it's just one more deadly hazard to add to the long list. Posted by Rand Simberg at April 20, 2005 05:44 AMTrackBack URL for this entry:

I guess it's not really clear from the article, but did it REALLY break off a part of the continent, or just part of the ice shelf? One of the few things I remember from grade school was that the Arctic circle is just ice-covered ocean, whereas Antarctica is an actual land mass, covered in ice. I would think it would take a much bigger chunk of ice (you know, like 72 miles, instead of 71) to actually break part of the continental mass away... Posted by John Breen III at April 20, 2005 06:59 AMKids, this is what can happen when you try to have your tongue pierced. Posted by McGehee at April 20, 2005 08:13 AMThat's so true McGehee. If I get my tongue pieced, it won't be with a 71 mile long iceberg! Posted by Karl Hallowell at April 20, 2005 08:59 AMQuick, somebody lasso that thing and haul it to Baja. Posted by JSAllison at April 20, 2005 10:20 AMThis thing broke off ice. A significant part of what we see as Antartica is ice shelf. That said, something this size could create a big hole if it hit ground.
