Heck, I'd love to see the French (and Russian and Chinese) and everyone else get their national libraries on-line. By the time they finish in, say, 10 years the translation engines will have improved to make all of it readily comprehensible -- if not literarily perfect. If the threat of Google makes that happen, so much the better.

Bad news for Jean, a simple Google search for "French Literature" doesn't even return the French National Library in the first five search results page s, they might as well surrender now and get it over with.

Didn't the French develop some kind of national Intranet? I seem to recall stories about a French Intranet, developed after the Internet but before its popularity took off, which served as a kind of electronic yellow p ages and email system?

Why does the spam-blocking software in this comments section prevent commenters from writing the word "p ages"?
I had the same problem when trying to discuss how many sheets of paper were in the Binder book. It would not let me post that word.

The anti-spam software on the blog is pretty tough. It wont let me post using my blog url. Which also has the dreaded p#ges word.
