Very nice essay, Rand.

Agreed. As a grad student in Aerospace Engineering and one who hopes to see true human expansion into space in my lifetime, I share your cautious optimism, Rand. Let's hope he can get things done over there at Nay-Say (the Rutan pronunciation) after all.

I like the "Cargo Cult" reference. That really hit home

True, Griffin will need a crash course in navigating Washington to get things done.

"True, Griffin will need a crash course in navigating Washington to get things done."

I'm planning on blogging on this in the future, but having worked on FLO and met the man, I can say that during FLO, he was keenly attuned to the political process.

I don't believe Griffin worked for AMROC in the '80s. Possibly the confusion is from his collaboration with Jim French (on the AIAA book "Space Vehicle Design"). Jim was VP of Engineering for AMROC from '86-'87. I think Griffin's career has been more mainstream.

Mike (and Jim French) did indeed work for AMROC. At least, so Jim Bennett, one of the founders, informs me. I also recall meeting him there at the time...
