A Choice Of Disasters

I was interviewed a few days ago by a reporter from the Sun-Sentinel. Surprisingly, it had nothing to do with either space or blogs. He was just looking for people who had recently moved here, to get a newcomer's perspective on hurricanes. He got my name (actually, Patricia's, but she was at work when he called, and I was home) from our next-door neighbor, who is apparently involved with the local Welcome Wagon.

Anyway, here's the result.

Best line is, "no cover charge." Great way to put it.

When I was quite young, we lived in Anchorage soon after the '64 earthquake - my father had gone up to install tsunami warning stations. We had to live in a hotel for much of our stay, since there were few houses left for rent. We had a number of aftershocks that would be considered fairly serious earthquakes themselves.
There had been a lot of damage. So I know what the aftermath of a serious earthquake looks like.

Still, I would prefer to live in California - barring LA and especially San Francisco (you couldn't get out of SF in a disaster) over living in tornado country. My aunt had two close brushes with tornados. I never did when I lived in the midwest, but we had BAD weather on a regular basis. You might see that kind of weather here once a decade, if that.

Still, my aunt was much more worried about earthquakes than tornados and nasty weather. Ah, well.

Having lived through three tornadoes, been brushed by a couple of hurricanes (when I lived in DC) and experiencing several earthquakes of various energies (up to 7), given a choice I opt to live near the San Andreas. :-)
