Pet Peeve

Of which I'm reminded amidst all the discussion about the forged documents--people who don't know the difference between a typeface and a font, including journalists, who should know better. Microsoft and the computer industry have blurred the distinction that was once very clear to the printing community.

Times Roman is a typeface, people.

Times Roman twelve-point italic is a font.

Sorry Rand according to dictionary.com they are synonyms of eachother:

font

n 1: a specific size and style of type within a type family [syn: fount, typeface, face]

typeface

n : a specific size and style of type within a type family [syn: font, fount, face]

All that means is that the dictionary folks have thrown up their hands and adopted the new usage, since it's become so (incorrectly) widespread. The fact remains that the computer types screwed up the original meanings of the words, and have made useless a formerly useful word.

I used to get annoyed with people that said "baud" instead of "bps" (as in "9600 baud modem"). They aren't the same thing, but most folks didn't know that. Ultimately, "baud" fell out of use, and it hardly matters now.

Clearly the dictionary people are in the pocket of the real perpetrator of this blurring of meaning... KARL ROVE!

;)

Age can be handy on this little bit of historical trivia.

I remember the difference between typeface and font. Typeface always referred to a family of related fonts.

Oh well... times they are a-changin'.
