It's Working...

McGreevey has suckered the gay community into supporting him.

This is pathetic. Don't they realize how much damage he's doing to their cause? Do they really want to embrace a "gay" governor who (ignoring the other rampant corruption in Jersey Democrat politics in general) hired his gay lover in a highly-paid position in national and state security for which he was utterly unqualified, in the middle of a war? If they had any sense, they'd be backing away and disavowing him as rapidly and vociferously as possible. But apparently sexual orientation conquers all. Even when it's possibly fake.

[Update on Monday morning]

Reader Scott Ferguson complains in comments that Barney Frank and the other people cited in the NY Post article aren't representative of the gay community.

Fair enough. Please provide me with someone who is. I'd be happy to link to criticisms of McGreevey from other prominent gay activists (or even some polling data), if someone can provide some.

Boy, what a time for Andrew Sullivan to be on vacation...

Mabey this is like the time Seymore Skinner mad a pass at his CO to get out of the Army so he could return to Springfield Elementary as a Principal again.

This baffles me as well.
You'd think they'd be beyond the "He's 'one of us,' so he must be defended to the death" thing by now.
If I was gay I feel I'd been suckered by the dude, and I'd be pissed.

Just for the record, the guy the governor claims was his lover was interviewed int he Israeli daily "Haaretz" today and denied everything.

You link to a NY Post article that quotes Democrat Barney Frank and spokesmen for two liberal gay organizations, and then declare "McGreevey has suckered the gay community into supporting him."

What???

Excuse me, Rand, but broad-brushing the gay community that way isn't fair. You know how the NY Post likes to gay bait for sensational effect.

If you were fair, you would quote a more representative sample of opinion in the gay community. Is that too much trouble?

Go for it. Find someone in the Gay community who is saying "We're sick and tired of our so-called political friends saying that he shouldn't be held responsible for gross stupidity and corruption because he's Gay." Find someone in the Gay community who says that it's wrong to play the Gay card to excuse wrong-doing.

Right now, the message coming from the Gay community is "It's okay, he's Gay.", which is semantically equivalent to "Gays are corrupt."

I'm pretty sure that that message is wrong, but if they insist on sending it....

Steve Miller over at the Independent Gay Forum has some links on the subject, but most of the columnist there only post articles after they have run in what ever paper the article was originally written for so it will be a couple weeks till their articles are posted. Most of the authors are really only known in the gay press, but they are proof of libertarian and conservative voices in what can seem like monolithically left gay politics.

Jonathan Rauch has written about the McGreevey thing, but in terms of marriage and social expectations.

So, anyway, my point is, there are voices that are speaking out against McGreevey, but they are not often heard in the mainstream press. I think the gay advocacy groups are really hurting themselves. People aren't stupid and it is obvious that McGreevey is scum. Groups like Human Rights Campaign giving him more than tacit approval for coming out is just going to undermine their own reputations.

I actually posted this without seeing the irony for a couple of seconds:

"Do gay activists really want to be associated with a corrupt governor accused of sexual harassment?"

Then I stuck this in:

"Okay, forget I asked."

Tomas Kohl did find one discouraging word from the gay community:

"UPDATE: Seems like the moment of sympathy had definitely passed, and McGreevey is taking hits from all directions. In response to a rather lame spin by Kevin Jennings, founder and Executive Director of, the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network, James Joyner says:

McGreevey's crime is not that he is homosexual or even that he is a lying bastard who ruined the lives of his family in order to gratify his sexual desires and advance his political career. Rather, his offense was criminal abuse of his office to appoint his illicit lover, a non-citizen not even remotely qualified for the job, to a high government post. As director of homeland security, no less."
