Damned If I Know Either From Lileks--too spot on to not quote a large section of: I was at both conventions in 1992, and the GOP version was a dispirited affair. Clinton had sparkle, the big mo, and a foundering economy to hammer; Bush was your father’s Oldsmobile. “Change” was the mantra. After 12 years we needed “Change,” whatever that might be, and the sax-blowin’ shades-wearin’ hubba-double-Bubba ticket had a fresh cachet the Bush team could not match. The Buchanan speech was a disaster – and not just for its effect on the swingers. I remember sitting in a bar the night of the speech with a portly squat guy covered in GOP buttons, listening to his lament. “This isn’t my party,” he said. “Okay maybe he has a point here, or another point there, but that speech – that’s not my party.”Posted by Rand Simberg at July 28, 2004 10:36 PM TrackBack URL for this entry:

Fear? Maybe this: http://www.newamericancentury.org Posted by at July 29, 2004 09:52 AMYowza! I took a look at that newamericancentury stuff that " " is worried about, and Wow! is that scary! Imagine all those furriners getting paved streets, potable water, good public health, education, and representative government. Can't have that now; it's too AMERICAN. Posted by slimedog at July 29, 2004 10:29 AMOr this: My friend Doug's older brother Rob, an Air Force retiree, thinks national security, missile defense, surveillance, and national pride from showing our strength thru force projection and taking space for America is the only worthy thing to be done in space anytime soon, if ever. When we’ve secured space for US dominance, then we can explore, let entrepreneurs take us wherever they can, and worry about getting to Mars. But not before then.
