Just How Useful An Idiot Is Oliver Stone? Go read this and find out. And laugh. Or weep. "But I do maintain that if it were a Stalinist state … they certainly do a great job of concealing it." With some people, such deception is apparently pretty easy. Useful or not to Mr. Castro, his idiocy and ignorance is confirmed not just by the contents of the interview itself, but by the fact that he allowed it to occur with such a knowledgable interrogator. Simply amazing. Posted by Rand Simberg at April 15, 2004 08:39 AMTrackBack URL for this entry:

Maybe someone should have a look at Olivers' finances and see if he's been selling some sugar cane "allocations"? This is rich... "OS: If they were being horribly mistreated, then I don't know that they could be worse mistreated." -after asking prisoners line up in front of Castro, so how's it been? Posted by ken anthony at April 15, 2004 02:25 PMOllie shore is smart, ain't he? Didn't Stalin do a fairly decent job of concealing the Stalinism of his state with, shall we say, a certain crowd? Posted by MattJ at April 15, 2004 05:21 PMI handed the print-out of this article to my not-so-very-politically-aware fifteen year old. He read it, asked if 'Castro was that dictator dude in Cuba' and then commented that he didn't think Oliver Stone was very bright. Posted by Brian at April 16, 2004 01:35 AMThis is a pretty amazing interview. It almost reads like a parody. Is Stone THAT naive? "OS: If they were being horribly mistreated, then I don't know that they could be worse mistreated [afterward]. " That's rich. It's also so callous. Either they're being treated well in prison and that's fine, or they're being treated awfully and they cannot be treated any worse than that--and that's fine too. Does anybody doubt that if these guys had said anything negative on camera that afterwards their guards would beat the crap out of them, or shoot them? It's a dictatorship! "ALB: Local representative elections. But what about a presidential election? And there's sophisticated thinking too--George Bush and Fidel Castro are equal. Posted by Dwayne A. Day at April 16, 2004 08:22 AMThanks for the link, Rand. I knew Stone was off center, but this! "OS: I did. He said something to the effect, "We have elections. ALB: Local representative elections. But what about a presidential election? OS: We didn't talk about it, especially in view of the fact that our own 2000 elections were a little bit discredited." Yes, I'm sure Cuba has big arguments about the best voting machines, hanging chads, butterfly ballots, and so on. I'm sure they allow open review of results as was done here that confirmed the winner. What a nut! Posted by VR at April 16, 2004 01:07 PMOliver Stone must have been smoking some of the local flora and I don't mean the cigars. Not comparing a brutal dictator (Castro) to another brutal dictator (Ceausescu) because of his shoulders and saying that's the reason he is more like Reagan and Clinton is insane. Stone is an idiot.
