Detection? Not quite, but still a noteworthy achievement. This was about determining closest distance of objects already detected. It does very little to mitigate the risk of a sucker punch from some object not yet discovered.

Yes, detection in the sense of quickly identifying which ones pose a hazard and which can be safely ignored.

I stand corrected. That would indeed be an example of detection (ie. To discover or ascertain the existence, presence, or fact of; To discern.)
