I wonder why so many reporters refer to yuhangyuan's as astronauts? A more direct and accurate translation would be space navigator.

Well... "astronaut" was formed in analogy with "aeronaut", and literally means "space sailor" -- not that much different than "space navigator", I think.
Besides, "astronaut" is the well-accepted English word for the profession, and so would be expected as the usual translation. Calling the Soviet (and now Russian) astronauts "cosmonauts" is a cold-war affectation, I think -- designed to emphasize the differences instead of the similarities of the two programs. We're past that now...
Finally, the Greek roots of "cosmonaut" are easily recognizable between Russian and English, a situation which simply doesn't apply to the Mandarin "yuhangyuan".
