Perhaps because skin is translucent rather than opaque and light does reach the baby? Just like the sound of the mothers voice and music reach the baby. Perhaps they smile and cry because they have feelings and are not suddenly human because the umbilical cord has been cut?

I don't remember any of my thoughts when I was six months old... should I assume I didn't have any? Arrogance and ignorance march on.
