It's wonderful to have people who think this recall is a joke and California politics are insane advise us on realism. I do realize that there are times when one must compromise and I realize that Arnold is far superior to Davis, but I take this election seriously. I may vote for Simon or McClintock, or I may vote for Schwartzenegger. I will wait for the campaign to decide. If Arnold is GrayLite, I can see no reason to support him.
Sometimes you have to accept that you cannot win but you have to do your best. Someone might have done better than Goldwater in 1964. I am sure Nixon or Rockefeller would have gotten more votes. But without Barry there would have been no Reagan and liberal Republicans and Democrats would still be promoting stability by propping up the Soviet Union.
Even Bustamonte or Huffington would be superior to Davis, especially if elevated by a recall. Perhaps this should be about getting the best Governor we can, but the reality is that it's about getting rid of the worst Governor we have ever had. Davis is special interest politics raised to its logic extreme and even Gary Coleman looks good by comparison.

California's republican party has really damaged itself leading up to the 2002 elections. Currently, it appears in a nasty feud between the religious right and a part backed by president Bush. I think this feud helped lead to another Davis win.
