Giving 'Em Hell

Orson Scott Card discourses on the moral imbecility of the left.

...we live in a world where we choose up sides first, and make moral decisions afterward, based almost entirely on what will serve the interest of our team.

It makes me ashamed of the Democratic Party that this seems to be the only moral process available to the party's leadership. I used to call myself a "Moynihan Democrat."

But now that he's dead, I'm reduced to calling myself a "Tony Blair Democrat."

That's because I cannot find a single leader in the Democratic Party who is capable of acting on the basis of what is right, rather than what will make our side win.

Read the Ender saga and loved it. Glad to hear Card's on our side.

Unfortunately, the "Moynihan Democrat", when forced to choose between his party and doing what's right, always, like Moynihan himself, chooses the party. Give me someone like Teddy the K who is at least honest and proud of being a party hack, instead of the phoney intellectual who's always hiding behind a bunch of platitudes until it's time to vote.

Card's outlook is not entirely bleak:

"...Fortunately for America, most rank-and-file Democrats do not suffer from the abysmal moral stupidity of the current Democratic leadership..."

Hey. Don't forget the "Ben Wattenberg Democrats." They have the courage of their convictions.

I whole-heartedly agree that politicians should have convictions - but can we keep them from getting out too early for good behavior?
