Four Decades Of Women In Space

Jim Oberg emails to remind me that today is the fortieth anniversary of Valentina Tereshkova's flight.

I simply note it now, but I may have something more substantive to say after giving it some thought.

One of the weirder footnotes to this was her getting married to Andrian Nikolyev, Cosmonaut of Vostok-3, by some accounts on direct orders of Krushchev. They had a daughter, but divorced several years later.

I can't help but note that the media keeps saying that Sally Ride was the first woman in space.

The Russians have been the first in everything regarding space... except for the moon.

And I contend that if the US had lost the race to the moon we would have made it to Mars by now.
