All Right, Moveable Type Folks
What's the deal with all of the repeat trackback pings? I've gotten them from N.Z. Bear, Dean Esmay, Joe Katzman, and probably others in the last few days.
Are you guys using the most recent version (2.63)?
[Update at 11:02 AM PDT]
I just got a third ping from Truth Laid Bear on this post. And he's using 2.63. Anyone know what's going on?

No idea on the trackbacks, but you know what would be way cool? If the Comments links code could be changed so that when new posts come up, the link stops showing as 'read' in the browser.

Pass the comment on the to the Moveable Type folks, though it might be a tough one to implement.

It occurs to me that an easier one would be to have a checkbox to indicate that you want to be emailed when new comments appear on a given post.

Whenever I accidentally ping someone more than once it's because I edited the post and, for whatever reason, my copy of MT didn't get the word that the pinged copy had already received it so it didn't store it as successfully sent.
My experience has generally been that this happens when the pinged server takes too long sending back the reply. I get double pings occasionally, too. If it only happens sometimes, it's probably just that your server was experiencing an especially high load when the ping came in.

Hm, I think it would be as simple as as modifying the anchor containing the javascript, perhaps adding a bogus second parameter indicating the number of comments, but it's been so long since I did any real work with HTML I am not sure. I'll do what you suggest tho.

Dodd is right. I've actually been in that code (I had to fix a bug involving w.bloggar and trackback. MT tracks the set of pings that it has done successfully and if the target site doesn't reply in time the ping is not stored in the "already done" table so next time the post is edited you get another ping.
The better fix would be, during trackback ping processing, check the existing pings and see if there's an exact match. If so, just reply "success" to the incoming ping. Maybe I'll take a look when I get back from my trip.

Sorry about that. Do you want me to not do trackbacks to you, until they get it fixed?
