Constitutional Ignorance

...is forgiveable for most, but not for a former Vice Presidential candidate and possibly future presidential candidate.

On This Week this morning, Joe Lieberman said that someone with Trent Lott's views shouldn't be in the line of presidential succession.

Don't worry, Joe, he's not.

Senate Majority Leader is not in the line of succession at all, let alone high in it.

The order is:

Vice President
Speaker of the House
President Pro Tempore of the Senate
Secretary of State

and then down the line of cabinet secretaries.

Here's the current batting order.

Interestingly, while Lott is not in the line of succession, Bob "Sheets" Byrd is President Pro Tem, at least until the new Senate is sworn in in January.

You'll have to forgive him his lack of understanding of just how our country works.

His best buddy AlGore said this week that Lott should go because of his segregationist views, or as Al put it people of all colors, "are one people under law." After all as a Dumbocrat he can't acknowledge the presence of God.

They, as Dumbocrats, evidently are not required to acknowledge the correct ways, or verbage that governs our country either.

I say let them self destruct, Lott must go for giving them ammunition and for other gaffs. But let them continue to show their own foibles and idiot attitudes. If they can't work together, hopefully, they won't regain the White House or Congress any time soon.

Come 03 January 2003 Bobbie the Sheets will be replaced by Ted Stevens of Alaska. This ceremonial honor always goes to the majority party member with senority, and Stevens' has been there since 1968.

Lieberman's comments are even stupider (yes, such things are possible) when you consider that until Milkmaid Jeffords switched, that postion was held by the person who started this whole mess back in 1948-- Old Throm Sturman hisse'f. (I heard sweet, lovable Maxine Waters call him that, and we know she's never wrong on the facts.) So an actual, breathing former segregationist or former Klansman in that job is perfectly acceptable to Mr. Morality, but someone who inadvertently says nice things one about them isn't.

All this is just pressure to make sure that Lott's contrition tour stays in the news, and Republicans get blamed for the Democrats past sins of slavery and segregation. If they weren't the Stupid Party, the Republicans would shove forward some items at the same time, forcing the Democrats to decide-- theatrics or substance? But they won't, and that's why Lott's gotta go.

Well, while I do think that Lott should step down (of course, I've thought that for years, particularly since the impeachment "trial"), I do think that if the Dems want to go beyond that and censure him, then Byrd and whatever others are available should get the same treatment.

Not all of the Dixiecrats changed parties...

Just a note to let you know that the Speaker is third and the Pres. Pro Tem is fourth.

I think Lieberman's "one people under law" may have sounded like a ripoff of "one nation under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance, but he was more likely referring to the idea of equality before the law.

But if he deliberately chose his words to sound like an alternate reading of the Pledge, I would not be at all surprised.
