Rules Of The Road

Tony Woodlief has some great ones. I particularly like numero dos--it's my top peeve.

When I'm made Lord Emperor of the Universe, one of my first acts will be to remove all signs that say "Slower Traffic Keep Right," and replace them with the more accurate "Left Lane For Passing Only."

No one thinks that they're slower traffic, so the first version isn't effective. The second should be the rule, and it should be a hefty fine, perhaps even prison time, if you're passed on the right by three consecutive cars. I kvetch about the Europeans a lot, but there are a few things they get right, and lane discipline (particularly in Germany) is one of them.

Of course, if you're poking along down the autobahn at a mere 130 kph or so, you're likely to get a Lamborghini or M3 rammed up your tailpipe...

But since 13/16 X 100 only = 69 MPH what's the point? I want 75+ just to get there

I don't know how you came up with your conversion factor, but on my planet, a hundred kilometers per hour is about 62 mph.

So 130 kph would be 62*130/100, or 80 mph.

I too get frustrated by people who make it impossible for faster traffic to pass, but there are times when it's not their fault. If there are too many cars on the road at one time, there's simply no way to maintain an empty lane on the left.

Let's say you're on a two-lane highway going 75 mph (5 miles more than the speed limit). You get into the left lane to pass a group of cars going 70. While you're waiting to pass this group of cars, a car going 80 pulls up behind you. Now, do you immediately get out of his way and force yourself to slow down so as not to rear-end the cars you were trying to pass, or do you force him to slow down while you wait for a more opportune moment to get out of his way?

And what if while this is happening, another car comes up behind you?

It's a real dilemma.

No, there's nothing wrong with holding up someone behind you wanting to go faster in the left lane as long as you are continuing to pass people on the right or if you're in turn being held up by someone in front.

In the latter case, though, the proper course is to pass him on the right when you get an opportunity (or persuade him to move over with a gentle beep or flashing lights).

The point is not that there's any right speed for the left lane, or that people have a right go as fast as they want in it--it's that its primary purpose is for passing. That people don't understand this is what's frustrating.

They'll be able to get around you as soon as you've passed the people on the right, and get back over to the right yourself.

I live in Texas and we routinenly drive 100 Mph on the interstates around here. I drove from Forney, TX to Galveston, TX in a little over 3 hours. Was a real easy going trip down, not many cars on the highways and interstates. On that trip I drove right past a Highway Patrol car going 90. Its a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.

Absolutely right about Germany, great place to drive.

I did, however, make the mistake at one point of crossing into France. "Holy shit" doesn't begin to describe it. Give me I-5 anytime.
