DoD always is behind the curve on personal technology. I recall when fiberoptic LANs were put on some ships, and the communicators refused to permit a drop in radio central because of Tempest requirements. No matter how many times I explained that Tempest wasn't applicable because it referred to electromagnetic radiation, which was not an issue with fiber, there was a stone wall as far as putting one of the PCs in radio on the LAN. Just wasn't gonna happen.

After about four or five years, the communications people decided that having a networked PC in radio for nonclassified e-mail was a Good Idea. So fiber was run to radio aboard the ships. In the interim, of course, e-mail had almost completely replaced radio messages for nonclassified administrative traffic.

Akshully I suspect that the lower ranking sorts have previously been hammered about this and only now has someone figured out that it's the more senior wheels that are the biggest PITAs about this stuff and gotten together enough firepower to make it stick, though we'll see about that...

Just a slight digression; in my days as a tank-rider I had to sit through numerous 'classes' on the evils of giving in to the temptation of conflicts of interest at the hands of nefarious contractors. Now, a buck sergeant who makes his living riding tanks is not, as a general rule, going to be very attractive to someone who's trying to grease the skids for a nice fat gummint contract, ya ain't been nowhere and ya don't know nobody. You're actually talking major-level and above here, and guess how many of those bright lights get their heads squeezed to sit through these things (hint, you can count the number of times on one hand and have 4 fingers and a thumb left over).
