Beer Contest
Well, actually it's a poll that Kevin Holtsberry is running to see which country has the best brewski.
I think that, like most polls, it will provide misleading results.
For instance, I'd say the USA, but not because of all the watery swill that comes out of Milwaukee and St. Louis--it's because we have such a plethora of microbreweries, some of which are superb. If you restrict the question to mass-produced beer, then I'd probably say Germany.

I saw an article the other day about how big brands are trying to capture the mom & pop brand customers (as in old bartles & james - not the best example of course.)

I wonder if that article ken mentions was the one in American Heritage, which I read last week (and I think it's on their web site now). The point of the article is that beer is democracy's (i.e., America's) beverage of choice. Worth a read, and there's a sidebar by Michael Jackson (no, NOT that one, I mean the other one) about America's ten best brews. Anchor is probably the largest brewery that makes the list, appropriately I think for they were one of the first to awaken widespead interest in craft beers.
By the way, I completely buy Rand's argument for the US for variety, and Germany for mass market product. But then, I live in the Pacific Northwest and will never have to drink Bud again.

By beer do we mean ale or lager? Germany has a good shout at being the country with the best mass market lager (although for my money The Netherlands and Poland beat Germany hands down - Lindeboom (Limburg) and Okocim (Cracow) - yum! , and lets not forget Belgium)
However in terms of ales, no-one is even close to the UK. Ireland has a few good beers, but for range and variety, it has to be Great Britain (and mainly England at that). Here in Costa Rica the beer is very Germanic in style (the two best sellers are Pilsen (!) and Imperial, which has a very Prussian-looking eagle as the trademark. Neither are world class though.) Real ale is unobtainable. I'm popping back to the UK in August so I shall no doubt indulge myself.
