Harry, Harry, Quite Contrary Just in case there was any doubt, Harry Browne has completely lost it. As a libertarian, this saddens me. Posted by Rand Simberg at March 14, 2002 11:32 AMTrackBack URL for this entry:

Very sad. I voted for Browne in the last election, too. I always respected Browne for his well-thought-out, rational libertarianism, but it looks like he's swung too far the other way for me. And, like many of the other anti-war types, he fails to offer anything resembling a working alternative to what we are doing. I hope the LP doesn't run him again in 2004. I was inclined to vote for Bush until his latest reversals on Israel, free trade, school choice and every other damn thing. As it stands, I'll probably vote for him anyway (better him than any of the current Democratic contenders) but I won't like it. Posted by Jeremy Nolen at March 14, 2002 12:54 PMOne day I received a newsletter via email. After reading it I stopped calling myself a ‘libertarian’, I unsubscribed to every newsletter from the Libertarian Party, I immediately distanced myself from anything that had to do with Harry Browne. That day was September 12, 2001. Harry Browne ‘lost it’ a long time ago, Mr. Simberg. I will stick with the same old poison, voting Republican or Democrat, not really because I want to but because anyone or any party associated with Harry Browne is not a choice for me. The only thing sad about the linked article is the fact that a yo-yo like Harry Browne can obtain a podium from which to spew. Posted by Quana Jones at March 14, 2002 01:20 PMI not only supported him, I was one of his damn delegates! Sheesh. And he has indeed been doing this since September 12. At one point Browne's group even forwarded along a Guardian article on "root causes," but this worldnetdaily article is his worst yet. It seems like he's trying very hard to fit things into his pre-conceived foreign policy position, and it's just making him look foolish. This wouldn't make me recant libertarianism -- that was never dependent on Browne -- but I'm certainly going to keep my distance from him. Posted by Mike Wells at March 14, 2002 02:42 PMHe's also corrupt. Liberty Magazine has done a good job of documenting how his presidential campaigns and his new foundation are basically excuses for him to fundraise and pay himself and his lackeys large salaries. Posted by Shane at March 14, 2002 10:15 PMHarry Browne is no longer connected with the Libertarian Party any more. After his 2000 campaign, Browne was kicked out of the party. In no way does Harry Browne represents the views of libertarians in general or the Libertarian Party. Posted by Cal Ulmann at March 15, 2002 06:43 AMIs there a reason that Libertarians have not been elected to an office higher than insect control district? Being a Repub/Lib I think that Libertarian ideas have made a contribution that far outweighs their political one. Libs should seriously think about abandoning the political side and concentrating on the Think Tank/policy side seeing this is where they have made the most impact. After speaking with run 'o the mill folks for years the impression I get is that pure Libertarianism scares the hell out of most of the folks I have spoken to. Opinions? Posted by Richard Cook at March 15, 2002 08:05 AM"An idea is not responsible for the people I agree. I just caught your post now, but Andrea Harris' link to the story led to my angry post a little while ago. The Constitution is the closest thing to political perfection man is likely to create -- it is worthy of protection. But who will do the job?
