My arm seems to be healing from my overextended bicep helping someone get a heavy object off a shelf at Costco yesterday. Put me into shock at the time — people wanted to call 911 because they thought I was having a heart attack. I managed to dissuade them.
Yeah, no good deed goes unpunished. The thing just fell suddenly when my arm was holding it, and it was a sharp pain. I started to feel a little faint, and had to sit down. They said I was very pale, and I was sweating. But I got them to not call 911, and just get me some water.
I can't imagine what a pain in the ass (and other things) it would have been if they'd called 911. Huge ambulance and maybe emergency-room bill because I'd just pulled an arm muscle.
Though, probably, once I explained to the paramedics what had happened, they'd have not bothered to take me, since I was mostly recovered from the shock by the time they'd have gotten there. So just paramedic bill…
Their concern was understandable; I did have symptoms of heart attack: pain in left arm, nausea, faintness, sweating, etc. But I knew what it was. I had to keep explaining to them that my arm hurt because I'd injured it, and the other (temporary) symptoms were all from shock.
My desktop computer is FUBAR. I can’t boot it. Getting it fixed is my highest current priority.
[Friday-afternoon update]
It seems to be a hardware problem. I built a clean install of Fedora 30, and the machine froze in the middle of the first software update. I’m running a memory test on it now, but I suspect it’s a motherboard issue. Which of course means CPU and memory replacement as well, unless I can find a used motherboard, because they don’t make AMD FM3 boards any more.
Any recommendations?
[Saturday-morning update]
Sorry, hadn’t realized that site wasn’t taking comments. It should work now.
I have one valued commenter whose comments are almost always being held up for moderation, even though I always approve them. I can’t see any reason for it in my blacklist. Does anyone have any ideas what the issue could be?
Today is Patricia’s birthday, and we’re celebrating by going to the mountains and desert of San Diego County for a few days, to see the super bloom of desert wildflowers, which are peaking about now. I’ll take a computer, but not sure how much posting I’ll be doing.
We’re closing on the house (just signed yesterday, and should get funds next week) and Monday’s my birthday (and the 33rd anniversary of the Challenger loss), so we’re splurging on a trip to Vegas this weekend. Be good in comments.
The gray one has figured out how to climb stairs. This could be a problem.
[Afternoon update]
When I say figured out how to climb, I meant that she is willing to come down them now that she knows she can go back up. They’ve spent their entire life with us (i.e., since Saturday) upstairs, because our house is upside down, with the living area upstairs, and the bedrooms (including my office) down. They’ve been living in Patricia’s upstairs office/bath, but now at least the gray one will have the run of the house, including my office. The black one is a little less developed; when she fell halfway down the stairs on Sunday, I had to carry her back up. But it’s only a matter of time until they’re both heading up and down.
[Update a while later]
These kittens are hilarious. I set down two bowls of food for them. One of them starts eating, and the other insists on eating from the same bowl. I pick her up and stick her face in the other one, and then she starts to eat from it.
[Update Friday morning]
Last night, we named them: Ashe and Ember (Ashe is the gray one, and I spell it like Ashe Schow’s name: she approved).
We put it on the market a couple weeks ago, and we got an offer of $275K on Saturday (the asking price was $280K). We counteroffered to split the difference, and they accepted it. It’s a young couple who reportedly loved the place. It’s their first house, and we’re told by the realtor that she was crying in joy, so that made us feel good. According to the realtor, everyone who saw it liked it, but apparently many thought it was priced too high. Fortunately, this couple didn’t, at least not much.
