Space Elevators

Alan Boyle has a report from this weekend's conference on them. It's unfortunate that it conflicted with NewSpace 2008, in the other Washington. But there are only so many weekends in a year.

[Update a few minutes later]

Alan's report is great, but there sure is an appalling level of ignorance in the comments.

Geez, you're not kidding! I thought you meant ignorance from the perspective of your level of knowledge. My favorites are all the multiple posts which just boil down to, "What holds it up?" Sixty years of spaceflight and people still don't understand the concept of "orbit". It's as bad as saying a rocket can't work in a vacuum. "Wind resistance" is funny too.
